A modernist desk lamp, manufactured by Kandem (Korting und Mathieson), Leipzig, Germany, in the late 1930s. The lamp clearly exhibits the company’s Bauhaus functionalist ethos. Executed in a very dark green lacquered metal, the lamp is very flexible and manoeuvrable. The curved arm is set into the base with a ball socket and the joint that links the arm to the shade pivots up and down. The lamp retains its original switch and is signed K & M for Korting and Mathieson on the underside of the base. The shade is enamelled white on the inside. It stands at approximately 480 mm in height, while the diameter of the shade is about 180 mm.

Detail

The lamp is in excellent used condition with just very minor general surface wear consistent with age. There are no significant damages such as dents or scratches. The lamp retains vintage (though apprently not original) European wiring and works. In common with all vintage electrical items it must be safety checked by a qualified electrician before use.

Detail

Walter Gropius intended the Bauhaus at Dessau to be a factory of ideas and innovation that attracted the co-operation of industry. He hoped that the design prototypes his masters and students produced would be taken up by the leading companies of the day and – in close collaboration with the School – developed for industrial production. This ambition was successful only in a few cases, but this lamp is an example of one such collaboration. The alliance between the Bauhaus and the Leipzig-based firm Korting und Mathieson began in the late 1920s and persisted into the 1930s. By co-operating with the Bauhaus, Kandem acquired creative partnerships with several of its key figures, including Marianne Brandt, Hin Bredendieck and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. Buy it now on eBay!

A 1930s table lamp by the Bauhaus teacher Christian Dell. This stunning modernist table lamp was designed by Dell for the Kaiser company in the 1930s. It’s an uncommon slight variant of Dell’s Model 6607, having a thinner and longer cylindrical wooden grip handle on the upright. As the master in charge of the metalwork department at the Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar, Christian Dell (1893-1974) worked in close collaboration with other modernist luminaries such as Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Marianne Brandt, Hin Bredendieck and Hans Przyrembel. His significance in the story of twentieth century design is becoming increasingly recognised by museums and leading auction houses worldwide.

Kaiser Idell Brand
Kaiser Idell Brand

Executed in black lacquered steel and chrome with painted wooden handle. The tubular steel upright is extendible to allow different heights and the shade can rotate through 360 degrees. It is stamped Kaiser Idell Original to the shade. The word Idell was an amalgam of Dell and idee, connoting a ‘Christian Dell idea’. Buy it now on eBay!

Size: About 570 mm in total height. The shade’s diameter is about 160 mm and the diameter of the base is approx. 165 mm.

Detail

Condition: The lamp is in very good unrestored condition with wear to the surface of the lacquer in places consistent with age and use but no significant damages such cracks or splits to the metal or signs of corrosion . As you can see, it displays beautifully. The surface wear is highlighted in the close-up photos that I have provided below. The silvered interior of the shade is in very good condition. The lamp retains its original switch but has had all vintage wiring removed for safety reasons, so it will required professional rewiring before use. Buy it now on eBay!

Kandem | Körting & Mathiesen AG, Leipzig

Kandem Desk Lamp Model One
Kandem Desk Lamp Model One

In the late 1920s the pioneering firm of Körting & Mathiesen AG, Leipzig, Germay led the field in creating innovative lighting. In the year 1889, the Company Körting Mathiesen & AG in Leipzig was founded and produced lamps under the name “Kandem”. The products produced included Electromechanic, transformers and lighting technology. Leading the market was Körting Mathiesen & AG for the manufacture of arc lamps for street lighting. Widespread in both private and public buildings, Kandem lighting fixtures also shaped nocturnal cityscapes throughout Europe. Drawing on intensive research and development, Kandem set the standards for modern lighting. From the productive Bauhaus collaboration with Kandem produced numerous types of lighting fixtures which were functional in design, form and construction. As a school of art and design, the Bauhaus in Dessau was famous far beyond the borders of Germany.

This pioneering achievement broke new ground in product development and design at a time when – unlike the present – collaboration between designers and industrialists was the exception. The results of their joint efforts were shown at important trade fairs such as the 1929 Werkbund exhibition ‘Wohnung and Bauen’ (‘House and Building’) in Breslau and the ‘Exposition des Artistes Decorateurs Franaise’ inParis in 1930. The lighting fixtures developed then are admired today as outstanding historic examples of product design. Sought after by collectors and connoisseurs, they are represented at auctions and numerous museums.

L’Etablissement L.Fontaine | France | SOLD

Le Elf Lamp

Seller assumes all responsibility for this listing.
Item location: Netherlands | Ships to: International
The lamp has been sold for USD 260.

Around 1930. The forged base holds a wonderful glass paste shade. Signed L’ELF for L’Etablissement L.Fontaine. Which was a company in art deco lighting around 1925 till 1939. Based in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris. The last pictures in the ad show a 1929 catalogue of the company. Their catalogues show they used glasses from many different glass factories like Holophane/Verlys.

The glass paste shades signed L’Elf were produced by both Degué and Delatte. The model on this lamp was obviously made by Delatte both in mottled structure as for the colour pattern it breathes Delatte who also made Delatte signed shades in exactly these colours. The height of the lamp is 34 cm (13-3/8″) and the diameter of the shade is 15,5cm. It is in excellent condition. With a nice deep-brown patina. Its rewired with twisted rayon covered cord, new plug and switch. Its old bayonet socket B22d.

Detail

I am selling some of my heritage including this very stylish Art Deco (actually Bauhaus) lamp by the famous Hungarian-born designer, architect Marcel Breuer. Perhaps the most widely-recognized of Breuer’s early designs was the first bent tubular steel chair, later known as the Wassily Chair, designed in 1925. Based on the information on the internet this commemorative lamp was sold at the Exposition internationale des arts decoratifs et industriels moderns in the same year.

Detail

The lamp is nickel plates brass, designed for Exposition Paris, 1925. The condition is very good considering its age. In minor places the brass shines through, but it was cherished for 80 years, and there are no dents on it at all. The bottom is leather covered to avoid scratching the surface of the table.

Detail

It was recently rewired, so safe to use (Note, the plug is for the continental Europe, you need to change is if you want to use it in the UK). I have 2 of this type (identical), and a 1 larger versions, see my other auction. Send me an email if you are interested in more than 1 lamp. You will not find this lamp often. If you search the internet you will find that one is for sale in New York, for $3,600, and one was sold in the UK (for unknown price).

Kaiser Idell | Christian Dell Wall Lamp Model 6723
Kaiser Idell | Christian Dell Wall Lamp Model 6723

Seller assumes all responsibility for this listing.
Item location: United Kingdom | Ships to: Worldwide
This listing has ended.

A Kaiser Idell Model 6723 wall lamp designed in the mid 1930s by the Bauhaus teacher Christian Dell. The lamp is constructed from black enamelled steel. It measures approximately 17 inches in length and the diameter of the shade is 6.5 inches. It is factory marked ‘Original Kaiser Idell’ on the rear of the shade and again on the rectangular wiring box on the rear of the arm.

Detail

Condition: The lamp is in excellent original condition with some minor expected surface signs of age and use but no damages. There is some general ageing in the form of some dulling to the lacquer, but no significant damages such as splits, cracks, corrosion or deep scratches. I could find no signs of restoration to the metal. The lamp has vintage – though apparently not original – continental European wiring and is electrically untested. Please see my important note about vintage electrical items below. This is a great opportunity to acquire a truly museum-quality piece of original Bauhaus design.

Although also a silversmith and jeweller he is now best known as functionalist innovator and a key figure in the development of industrial lighting. His significance in the story of twentieth century design is becoming increasingly recognised by museums worldwide.
